Football Giants Review”

giants helmetThe New York Football Giants are now 4 games over 500 for the first time in 4 years.  You ask yourself how this is possible with a running game that is one of the worst in the league and an offensive line that can be offensive at times.  Eli Manning, despite making some poor decisions throwing the football has had an outstanding season so far.  He gets rid of the football, quickly and despite what some people may think about his accuracy; Eli has had a pretty accurate season so far.  If the Giants improve the offensive line next year and keep the talent they have this year, they could be a very competitive team in the east and give Dallas a run for the division title.

The defense has improved dramatically over last year and the pass rush is just starting to come around. Defensive end Oliver Vernon and Jason Pierre-Paul are learning how to play with each other, which gives the Giant defense that extra push they need to close games when the offense stalls.  New comers in the defensive backfield, Janoris Jenkins, Eli Apple, Dante Deagon, Michael Huntgee, and Matt Smalley along with returning veteran Domenique Rogers  Cromarti have formed a very good secondary and the defensive line led by Damon “Snacks” Harrison have performed better so far than expected.  The Giants head coach, Ben Mcadoo, has done a good job for a first year head coach – but Ben your offensive play calling is not fooling anyone.  Ben, you need to hire a good offensive coordinator and stick to being the head coach.  With a good offensive line and a good offensive coordinator that offense can be awesome.  Combine that offense and defense (Steve Spagnolla is one of the best defensive coordinators in the League) and next year can be a Super Bowl Year.

Giants vs. Dallas Heartbreaker

GIANTS VS DALLAS The New York Football Giants allowed a TD with seven seconds left in the game to lose it. The Giants had the game all wrapped up (everyone expected the game to be a Dallas blowout) until the Cowboys went 72 yards in six plays with 7 seconds left in the game to pull victory out of the jaws of defeat. The number of ways the Giants blew this game is unbelievable. The Giants weren’t good enough to stop the Cowboys when it counted. Let’s go over some of the dumb coaching mistakes in the last 3 minutes. Let’s start when the Giants had the ball at the one yard line. It was first and goal and Eli and the Giant’s offense had 4 downs to run out the clock and go up 10 points with under 2 minutes left in the game. Rashad Jennings was told by Eli Manning not to score so the Giants could run the clock down. Eli thought Dallas had used their last time out on the previous pass play to Odell Beckham. It is up to the coaching staff to remind the quarterback how many time outs are left and to make sure the coaching staff and quarterbacks are on the same page. If the Giants score here, the percentages were very high that Dallas could not come back from a 10 point deficient with less than one minute and 30 seconds left in the game, to score 10 points. The Giants did not score on the first two downs from the one yard line. Now, you would think the strategy would be to run on 3rd down and 4th down to get at least one yard to score, right? Wrong! The genius coaching staff sent in a passing play that was incomplete. If they would have run on 3rd and 4th down, not only were their chances of getting that touchdown good but the clock would have come down another 80 seconds. Even if they didn’t score on 4th down, Dallas would have been on the one yard line with very little time to get into field goal range to tie the score. The play calling and time management were very bad, and this is what caused the Giants to lose the game. It is time for a new coaching staff. Coaches have gotten fired quickly for making poor decisions as Coughlin and his staff did in the last 3 minutes of this game. If you’re a Giant fan, you are outraged with the final outcome of this game. The Giants have not made the playoffs since 2012 when they won their last Super Bowl. It’s time for a shakeup in the front office and time to replace an aging coach who has seen his better days.

Yankee’s in First Place… Surprise!! Surprise!!

The 2015 Baseball Season has certainly been very unpredictable (if you’re a New York Yankee fan) roughly, a third of the baseball schedule has passed and we still don’t know who the real Yankee Team is.  The Yankees still lead the American League East even though most of the Brian Cashman’s trades from last year still have not worked out particularly well (although we should give it more time).  It’s still early, 2/3 of the baseball season is left.

Masahiro Tanaka has pitched great since coming off the disabled list (weeks ago) but I worry every time he pitches.  You have to wonder if the next pitch he throws will be his last and Tommy John surgery is just around the corner.

Will the real Stephen Drew please stand up?  He is great defensively but what can we expect from him on a consistent basis offensively?

Chase Whitley has 12 errors at 3rd base and can’t be counted on at the plate when the team really needs him.

Carlos Beltran has played better of late but he looks old and I wonder if he can withstand a 162 game baseball season.

Didi Gregorius has settled down at short stop, but I still question some of the defensive decisions he makes.  He has 8 errors at short and for someone who was touted as a defensive genius before he came here, he has yet to impress.  He sometimes looks lost at the plate and you wonder if he really belongs in the pros.

The jury is still out on CC Sabathia, one week you get the good CC and the next week you get the bad CC.  Hopefully as the season goes on he will become more consistent.

Michael Pineda is developing into a number one caliber starter (that was a great trade Brian Coshman made to get him).  If he and Tanaka stay healthy, the Yankees could have two number one caliber starters on the team.

Thank god for Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances.  Both these guys have been lights out and without them the Yankees would be in last place not first place.  Both of these guys should be voted onto the American League All Star Team.  They have earned it.  It’s no surprise the Yankees are in first place in baseball’s worst division.  No team in the American League East has shown they are ready to step forward and be a dominant team.  With the American League East being so weak, the Yankees may have just enough to win baseballs worst division.  The Yankees have some good ball players on the farm, and we could possibly see some of them before the baseball season comes to an end.

Since April 4th, I have been watching Yankee Games on TV and in particular watching the Yankees shortstop DiDi Gregorius play shortstop.  Well, needless to say, the young shortstop’s first couple of weeks was less than memorable.  With all the defensive and base running lapses he made in a few short weeks and the fans chanting Derek Jeter’s name, I felt really bad for this young kid. To add fuel to the fire, the kid the Yankees gave up (Shane Greene) has 3 wins and no losses with the Detroit Tigers and has an ERA  less than one.  So far it looks like a bad trade for Brian Cashman, but it’s only 3 weeks into the season and we have a long way to go before we pass final judgement.  What Yankee fans should be upset about is the fact that the Yankee lineup looks old and it looks like another year of not making the playoffs.  When Alex Rodriguez (40 years old this year) is probably going to be their best hitter, this team is in big trouble.  I know this team needs to get young, but the new owners are more financially conservative and it will take a heck of a lot more time to do this under this regime then when George Steinbrenner was alive and in control.  George’s goal was to win championships every year and he didn’t care how much money was spent doing this.  Now that George is gone, I think fans really appreciate what he meant to the team and to Yankee fans.  In spite of all the media buzz about how bad George Steinbrenner was and all the negative press when he was alive, the truth is he was a great owner and good for baseball.  The Yankees have not had a championship since 2009 and have missed the playoffs (this year will be 3 years in a row) again and again.  They beat the Tigers 3 out of 4 , but this team is not a playoff team. George can’t be happy about what he is witnessing and how the team is being managed.  I just wish Hal Steinbrenner had some of the fire his dad had.
